The Rotary Club of Kirinyaga has renovated the special unit classrooms at the Gakoigo primary School, a public day school in Kirinyaga Central sub-county. The projects which falls under the basic education and literacy area of focus sought to improve the learning environment of the learners with disability.

The project entailed painting tiling, construction of an access ramp, mounting of a hand wash station, piping of water into the classrooms and drawing of learning modules on the classroom walls to enhance learning for the pupils living with special needs.

The renovation was fully implemented by the club in consultation with the schools management to ensure the project achieves a highly supportive learning environment based on what works in aiding learning for children with special needs, promotes their education and social inclusion and promotes the efficacy of implementing interactive learning environments for the teachers.

The project which was commissioned by the District Governor Alex Nyaga is one of the club’s signature projects. The concept of renovation of special unit classes is aligned to the clubs vision of creating a lasting change in the community in which they live in. The renovated classrooms are expected to host about thirty children living with special needs.
During the commissioning of the classrooms the club also donated grooming kits to the children and planted one hundred and fifty tree seedlings as part of its commitment to support natural resource management and conservation.
