When the Rotary Club of Nairobi-Connect first visited OlTepesi Primary School in 2021, what stood before us was a picture of need and resilience.
The school had no fence, and wandering animals often found their way into the compound. Some children slept on the floor, and resources were painfully limited. Yet beneath it all was a quiet determination, a spirit that believed things could be better.
Through a needs assessment, we discovered what truly mattered to the students and teachers. One of the first steps was securing the school environment. We built a fence and a proper gate, giving the learners a safe space to study and protecting school property.
The difference was immediate. The grounds became calm and orderly, and the children could learn without disruption. We planted trees, a simple but lasting symbol of growth and hope.
When the pandemic struck, we introduced a WASH project, teaching students the value of hygiene and providing water stations and soap. From that small act came a culture of care for health, for one another, and for their surroundings.
As we deepened our partnership, we built a classroom that the school later transformed into a science laboratory. It has since become a cornerstone for learning, inspiring curiosity and improving performance in science-related subjects.
We also donated beds and mattresses to make boarding comfortable, ensuring that no child would have to sleep on the floor again. In October, we returned with textbooks to enrich their learning experience and strengthen academic outcomes.
Since it was our 6th anniversary, we also celebrated the day with the children and teachers, sharing cake and soft drinks to mark not just our milestone, but the incredible progress of the OlTepesi community.
The impact has been profound!
The Head teacher shared how retention has improved and how the students now approach learning with confidence and pride.
What was once a struggling institution is now a thriving hub of possibility, nurtured by consistent care and collaboration.
Our work at OlTepesi Primary is not complete. The next chapter calls for a computer lab and a borehole to ensure digital access and clean water for all. We remain committed to walking this journey hand in hand with the community, because true transformation is not a moment, it is a movement of hearts, united by purpose and hope.
