A team from Rotary Club of Hurlingham visited St Joseph The Worker Secondary School in Mang’u, Kiambu County on 4 March to donate laptops to enhance their digital literacy and curriculum development.
We received a warm welcome from the administration and given a brief history of the school.
The school was founded in the 1960s and has since steadily grown. It is a mixed day secondary school with 672 students. We received a very warm welcome from the school’s IT patron, the principal, teaching staff and the students. The principal informed us of their intention to accommodate a class of 40 students in one computer class once the new school academic year begins in May 2022 and appreciated our laptops donation towards achieving that goal. The donation was in partnership with General Electric East Africa’s IT for Charity Program to support and enhance the school’s digital learning efficiency.
Mentorship Session
Rotarians had a mentorship session with the students which was very interactive and fun. We were commended on that as we offered it for free whereas institutions pay to give mentorship sessions! There was one student who excitedly remembered President Veronica from a past event within the county way back when she was in her primary school. One of the teachers informed us he was a Rotaractor making that a high chance of adopting the school as an Interact Club.
Thereafter, we had the laptops handover and a testing session where the students clearly demonstrated their fast learning skills. We then went to plant some trees within the school compound in our continued effort to conserve the environment in our on-going RC Hurlingham Tree Planting Challenge, after which we were invited for lunch with teachers as we had an informal session with them.
RC Hurlingham had positive discussions with the school administration to have an Interact Club at the school. There was a notable need for class rooms and furniture, more computers, a library and an additional laboratory because of the growing student population.
It was an amazing day. One Love.
