Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in most superstitious cultures.  However,  Friday 13th November 2020, was a great day for Kilimani Primary School, thanks to the partnership and collaboration of Safaricom Foundation and Rotary Club of Lavington Jioni.  The school had reached out to the Rotary Club with various needs which we categorized into three phases with the objective of supporting the school in providing a safe and clean environment for cooking and eating.

The school had reached out to the Rotary Club with various needs which we categorized into three phases with the objective of supporting the school in providing a safe and clean environment for cooking and eating.

In phase 1, we constructed a kitchen and installed energy-saving  (cookers) Jikos.  This eliminated the use of firewood for cooking which was not environmentally sustainable and also resulted in a very smoky environment. In phase 2, we worked on getting tables and chairs for the dining room.  The school has 1,500 students and the furniture in the dining room was not sufficient.  The Rotary Club of Lavington Jioni deliberated on the best way to meet this need and as luck would have it, Safaricom Foundation was calling for “Ndoto Zetu” proposals,  which we applied for and received support.

The official hand over ceremony was hosted by the Head Teacher, with Class 8 students present. We took this opportunity to mentor the students on career choices with many showing an interest in the Health and Legal sectors.  We  handed over a Coffee Table book “Life’s Journeys. Seeking Destiny’s” donated by Footprints Press to the Deputy Headmistress for the school library. The students and administration of the school were very grateful for the delivery of the much needed tables and chairs.

Phase 3 of this project will be further refurbishment of the dining room, that is, the roof/celling, walls and floor and  additional furniture and fittings. If you would like to partner with us reach out to our Projects Director, Ng’anga Wanjohi at lavingtonjioni@gmail.com.
