The project aimed at bringing together Rotarians and Friends of Rotary to share Christmas gifts with the inmates at Embu Women’s Prison, Embu County. Rotarians spend their time with the inmates, to give them hope and share fun moments; dancing, and team-building activities. Within the prison, there are women with their young children and as such, they need psychological well-being, toiletries, learning materials for the kids, etc.

The inmates are very talented and have a knitting project where they make items for sale and the club members purchase the things to support them. Approximately 118 inmates and kids were gifted with kids’ plastic chairs and clothes, learning materials, toiletries, and food items. We sensitized them on mental health advising them to share out their issues with the Chaplain; make friends with fellow inmates, accept their current situations and live in peace with themselves and others. We bought beautiful bags and sweaters from the inmates and shared a cake with Prison Wardens and the inmates. Very touching, was one of the inmates mentioning that she ate a cake 5 years ago; encouraging members to do more in the future e.g. chapati forum in the prisons.

This project was funded through the members and friends of Rotary contributions amounting to 410 USD which was spent purchasing gifts and food items. Transport to and from the prison was facilitated by members who volunteered their vehicles and ferried members and their items. The Rotary Club partnering with the following Clubs in the project are the Rotary Club of Embu Nouvelle IF, Rotaract Club of Embu Community Based, Rotaract Club of Embu College, and Rotaract Club of University of Embu IF. for more information please visit https://web.facebook.com/emburotary https://www.instagram.com/rc_embu/ http://www.rcembu.org/
