The Rotary Club of Ngong Road recently embarked on a needs assessment visit to Orus in Tiaty East in northern Kenya.
The goal was to understand the community’s real challenges in maternal and child health and lay the foundation for a global Grant that will bring long-term, sustainable change.
The three-day visit to northern Kenya was long, but we arrived safely at Tangulbei by evening for the day's rest. The following day, the Rotarians set off for Orus Centre. The day’s activities began with a series of needs assessment sessions involving men, women, expectant mothers, youth, community health promoters, religious leaders, and local administrators. The team also toured the Orus Health Facility, witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by local health workers.
Donation of essential medical equipment including a delivery bed, delivery sets, weighing scales, a medicine trolley and basic supplies were presented to help strengthen maternal and childcare. In addition, the club donated 10 bags of maize to support families facing food insecurity.
On the third day, the journey back to Nairobi began. It was quieter, filled with introspection. Club President Mwende Mulandi described the mission as “a call to grit and resilience". The Orus trip was about listening before acting, serving before speaking, and building a foundation for meaningful impact.
